Around the foundation of the International Skating Union (ISU) in 1892, both amateur and professional skating competitions were command, and the first skaters claiming themselves to be World Champions were all professionals. While the ISU also created a championship for pros, this was only held once, in 1894.
Due to the absence of a governing body, there is no official list of championships. We have attempted to list those competitions that in contemporary sources or later statistical works are most commonly listed as of world championship level. However, the inclusion or exclusion of events to this list is contestable.
