Despite a Commonwealth Winter Games Federation first being mooted in 1953, the Games did not take place until 1958 thanks to Thomas “Tyke” Richardson (16 January 1887 - 7 January 1971), former skater, international figure skating judge and author, who was married to Olympic skater Mildred “Wag” Richardson (née Allingham; 19 July 1893 - 29 June 1987). Richardson got the inaugural 1958 Games under way just three months after first conceiving the idea. There were four editions of The Games, although the fourth and last one in 1970 met with very little enthusiasm, not helped when the English women’s ski team pulled out just before the start of the Games. The 1970 edition got very sparse coverage in the British press and it would appear that only men’s and women’s giant slalom and slalom skiing events were held.

All editions of the Commonwealth Winter Games were held at St. Moritz, Switzerland – not a Commonwealth country! All the Games were regarded as unofficial.

The curling events were cancelled while the Games were taking place because of other commitments by the St. Moritz curling committee.
